Remembering Ossie Doherty and David Hayward

Ossie’s memorial swim with the Frigid Frogs Swim Club

1 May 2022

Today we remembered Ossie Doherty at a memorial swim with the Frigid Frogs Swim Club in South Curl Curl: when he was in his 80s Ossie was recruited to the Frogs by Warringah founding member John Pagden, and subsequently joined Warringah in his late '80s.

Ossie threw himself into the Masters 'thing' - always avaialable to compete, stepped up for releays (still a record holder), competed in Nationals and picked up Golds at the 2017 World Masters in Auckland.

In the 90+ group, Ossies's short course 25m, 50m and 100 free State records still stand five years on ..as do his 25m and 50m backstroke; four years on his State long course 50 and 100 free still stand; his 4x100 Mens 320+ Medley team 2013 National record stands as do many State relay records, and who can forget the 360+ 4x50 Free National Record in 2017 when Ossie was 91.

At the swim today, members of Ossie's Family and Warringah Masters swimmers including long time Frog's member Stuart Meares who reminded us of Ossie's endearing qualities ...a touching moment ...

Vale David Hayward - Club member from 2007 to 2009

12 May 2022

We are sad to report the passing of David Hayward at the age of 57. Many of our longer standing members would remember David, and newer members with a Carlile background may also have known him. One such former Carlile swimmer was Tony Tooher who writes:

David was a particularly active member of the club from around 2007 to 2009, including participating in the World Championships in Perth in 2008 where among other notable achievements he set the NSW record in the 40-44 years 50 metres breaststroke (long course) and placed in the Top 10 in that event, following on from being a very successful swimmer in his youth. David re-joined the club this year after a bit of a break.

David was one of the longest surviving people to have cystic fibrosis.

Everyone who met David found him to have a beaming smile and a wonderful laugh (and to often be laughing), and to make highly intelligent and very insightful comments on a wide variety of topics and issues. He was an extremely accomplished pianist and a very well-regarded piano teacher – see e.g. the testimonials on the website for his business, Sound Harmony. He was also very determined, very disciplined and a great fighter, despite the numerous adversities thrown at him by having cystic fibrosis, attributes which continued throughout his life. He was someone who was able to demonstrate very clearly to many others whom he encountered the importance of perspective and not complaining about trivialities. Those who know David are indeed very fortunate people.

David had a successful lung transplant in 2018. More recently, he unfortunately had a series of setbacks. Our deepest condolences and sympathy to his wife, Janette, and to David’s and Janette’s families. For those who knew David, his funeral will take place at 11:00am this Friday 13 May 2022 - details of the venue and how to livestream the service in the link below:
